Captain's Match Report
So, the first day of my captaincy year was finally here. Did it get off to a good start? No!!! From a venue point of view, was it a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing? Absolutely!!!
Firstly, and unbeknown to me, our allocated buggies had been cancelled - not what do you want to hear when a lot of of our members were relying on them, including those travelling a considerable distance. Many thanks to Tim Grimes for once again coming to the rescue.
Secondly, and based on the agenda, the full-English breakfast was scheduled for 8:45 am, thus allowing it to be consumed in plenty of time before the AGM. But, oh no! Some bright spark from the catering to staff decided that we were better suited to a “rolling breakfast”. Consequently, some plates of food were nearly cold. That being said, it was still rather tasty.
The AGM followed and was concluded, in what can only be described as, record time (a copy of the minutes of the AGM will be winging its way to your inboxes in due course).
So, onto the good bit-the golf itself. I was paired up with Andy Webb (Vice Captain), Pete Tweddell and Brian Goodhew. The golf was comparable to Tower Bridge, a little bit up-and-down at times, but the overall scores did not disgrace any of us and the companionship, rivalry and banter was second to none - exactly how it should be. The disease-ridden greens were questionable at times in terms of their trueness, but I guess this is what you expect from a hotel providing a golf course and not vice versa! The rain stayed away, but the wind was very chilling at times, so thank heavens for good old Angela at the “halfway house” for the warming cup of hot choccie.
So, round completed and back to the bar to await the return of the other eight groups; the thoughts and feelings about the initial mornings shenanigans that could have spelled disaster, firmly in the back of my mind….. but oh no! Just to add insult to injury, some bright young spark had decided to get married there. To say that it was chaotic in the bar was an understatement, and yet the eye-candy causing Dave Verga’s eyeballs to pop out of his head like organ stops, was a site to behold! Paphos - prepare yourself - he’s coming back in June!!!
Many thanks to Tony Jacobs, for rallying around on behalf of yours truly, to bag us the snooker room; at least I could finally hear myself for the presentations that followed.
Once again, can I take this opportunity to thank everyone for coming to Broome Park, and to all the members of the committee for their sterling efforts throughout the year.
I look forward to seeing you all at Cobtree Manor, on May 16th, to do battle for the Mick Miller Trophy.
