Captain's Match Report

After the devasting storms that prevented us from holding our February meeting, it gladdened the heart to arrive at Poult Wood golf course bathed in early spring sunshine. As I arrived in the car park not having played a round of golf since the beginning of February, I was for no particular reason randomly reminded of a quote I once read that ‘golf can break your heart quicker than a blonde in a Ferrari’ Well, I have yet to meet a blonde in a Ferrari (or even a mini come to that) but it is certainly true thatgolf can sorely test your temperament, and break your heart, especially for example when you hit a decent enough putt only for it to stick doggedly in the last millimetre to the hole. We all know that that one!

Anyway, I digress. Arriving in the restaurant, it was good to be given a very good bacon sandwich and have a decent(ish) cup of coffee. It was also good to see that we had 32 members playing, with there being 4 guests.

Before we set off, I was able to congratulate and present Stuart Verga with the Len Hall Trophy, for being the overall winner at Pedham Place with a score of 40 points. Well done Stuart!

It was perhaps a little bit disappointing the course had temporary mats on every hole, and 6 temporary greens, but given the recent weather that was somewhat understandable. I have to say I personally find trying to hit a golf ball off a mat a bit of a challenge, (and yes, ok, Ican find all golf a bit of a challenge) but the mats at Poult Wood were, I thought, actually very good. And it was nice to see that, at 6 inches in diameter, the holes on the temporary greens were cut reasonably well. And, whilst there were wet areas at the sides of some fairways, generally the course seemed to me to be in pretty good condition.

Joining me this month was Chris Lewis, Pete Tweddell and Brian Woods. Brian immediately set the tone with a par on the first hole, and then went on to par the next 4 holes, thereby laying down a marker that he was going to be well in the mix come the 19th hole.

As our round progressed into the back 9, we were enjoying the sunshine, and playing pretty well, with Brian continuing to show the way. I guess the highlight of my round was the par three 12th, where, with thanks to a friendly bounce, I somehow managed to end up pin high and around 10feet away. Could I possibly be in the mix to take the sleeve of balls for nearest the pin on this hole? In my dreams, as from the results you will see that I was pipped, with that honour going to a well-deserved Adrian Reeman.

On the 18th it was a real pleasure to say thank you to Pete, Chris, and Brian for making my final round as Captain so very enjoyable. We had all played fairly well, but Brian in particular had puttogether an excellent round of golf.

Back in the Clubhouse, for those eating there was a rolling mealof ham, egg, and chips. Luverly!

With Pete Tweddell and his magic results spreadsheet sortingout a couple of scoring glitches, it was clear that there were several who hadcome in with some very good scores. And so, to the winners, with a score of 41 points, Adrian Reeman took Division 3,with a score of 43 points, Division 1 went to David Williams with a score of 43 points, but with a really excellent score of 48 points, Brian Woods not only took Division 2, but also won the Committee Shield for being the overall winner. Therefore, many congratulations to Adrian and David, and especially to Brian for a very fine winning round of golf. And just to complete things, nearest the pin prizes are listed in the results, and James Hincks was best guest.

The last prize for me to hand out was the Champions Trophy, which this year goes to Dave Verga. Over what has been an extended year, Dave has been consistently scoring championship points, to the extent that he won the trophy regardless of his score at Poult Wood. So again, many congratulations go to Dave for such a consistent year’s golf culminating in him being our overall champion.

And that is just about it. My time as your Captain is finallycoming to an end, and to say I have found it to be an honour is a bit of an understatement. I would like to say a big thank you to the members of the Committee, and to all members of the Society for your wonderful support during my term of office. It has been said by some wag that golf is a good walk spoilt. Well, whoever may have said that has certainly not played a round of golf with members of the Malling Area Golf Society. The strength and fabric of our society is in its membership, and the fact it welcomes all into its ranks with warmth and friendship. We continue to go from strength to strength and myvery best wishes go to Bob Crouch, who from the AGM will be taking over as our Captain.

And so, the year moves on and our next meeting is on Friday 22 April 2022 at Broome Park Golf Club, Canterbury Road, Barham, CT4 6QX. This is also our AGM, so please make every effort to come along on this important day.

In the meantime, stay safe, and see you at the AGM.

All best wishes

Geoff
